Mary Hayashi Shoplifting Tumor - Brain tumor behind lawmaker’s theft? California Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi pleaded no contest to shoplifting charges Friday. After the plea, her lawyer said the lawmaker’s benign brain tumor might have affected her judgment. Hayashi, 45, was seen on surveillance cameras in October taking about $2,500 worth of merchandise, including leather pants, from a San Francisco store.
Her attorney claims a brain tumor caused the shoplifting incident. He says it's benign. And he says she's receiving treatment.
A California lawmaker accused of shoplifting from a department store has pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of grand theft.
Democratic Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi of Castro Valley appeared in San Francisco Superior Court on Friday to enter her plea.
Hayashi previously pleaded not guilty to a felony charge. A judge agreed to reduce the charge at the Friday hearing.
She was immediately sentenced to 3 years of probation and a small fine.
