3 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan, Three U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan, and several were wounded, military officials said.
The service members were assigned to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. No other details were released.
Their deaths come as the United States prepares to withdraw combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year.
As of Aug. 9, at least 2,124 U.S. soldiers had died in the 12-year war in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 1,759 were killed in action.
In the first half of the year, civilian deaths have surged 14 percent, reversing a decline the previous year, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.
The group documented 1,319 civilian deaths between January and the end of June, most caused by improvised explosive devices.
