Death toll from train derailment in Mexico rises to five, The number of migrants who died in a train derailment in Mexico has risen to five, the Tabasco state's attorney general's office said Monday.
The dozen injured of the roughly 275 migrants making their way north were taken to nearby hospitals, El Universal reported.
The derailment occurred Sunday in a desolate area of southern Veracruz. The train in which the migrants were riding overturned.
Employees of the railway company, Ferrocarril del Istmo, said the accident could have been caused by earth softened by recent rains and stolen hardware used to secure the rails, El Universal reported.
The locomotive and the first car, which didn't leave the track, were used to transport the injured to area hospitals, Tabasco's Ministry of Public Security said.
Authorities said two cranes were expected to arrive Monday to help remove train cars from the track so officials could search for more survivors or victims
The National Commission on Human Rights said an investigation has begun.
