Like fellow Brit Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods and Ernie Els and others, Westwood doesn’t need to go very far to rest up after he finishes this afternoon’s round.
Westwood, 39, who ended Woods’ reign as No. 1 golfer in the world in late 2010, has just plunked down $5.875 million on a brand spanking new 10,000-square-foot mansion in the Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens.
The deal for the one-acre property on Tillinghast Circle and the five-bedroom house on Old Palm’s 14th fairway was consummated Feb. 15, according to public records obtained.Records also show he took out a $4.2 million-mortgage.
Westwood, his wife Laurae and their two children moved in Monday even if the digs aren’t quite finished yet.
Westwood told London’s Daily Mail that he was tired not being able to work on his game in rainy old England and decided to move to Palm Beach Gardens a year ago. He settled on Old Palm for its state-of-the-art golf practice facilities and child-friendly environment.
“I’d made my mind up that I needed to make this move to help my career and once I knew everyone else was happy, we all started to look forward to it,” said Westwood. “I knew the kids would make friends easily and Sam can’t wait for his 12th birthday next month when he can drive a golf cart around the place. To be fair, there’s a lot to like, with the weather and the people are very friendly.
