Missing border collie: 7-year-old collie trapped in a tree, rescued safely

Missing border collie: 7-year-old collie trapped in a tree, rescued safely, A missing border collie, 7-years-old, that had disappeared from his home in Iowa didn’t go a great distance on the ground — but he did get caught in a tree, trapped in its branches until a rescuer was able to get him down. Yahoo! reported this Tuesday, Aug. 13, that Laddy the dog is back in his owner’s good hands.

The missing border collie, Laddy, was discovered early Sunday morning stuck quite high up a tree only a couple of blocks from his home in Davenport.

The dog’s owner, Cynthia weeks, had posted search signs in the neighborhood to help find her runaway pet, but the eventual response was certainly one she hadn’t expected.

"I asked where they found him, and the officer said, 'You'll never believe this,'" Weeks said in a statement.

The tree was near the yard of Ron Stevenson, who was shocked to look up from his outside chores after hearing a dog’s bark — a bark that turned out to be from the missing border collie. Although he’d heard the collie’s bark in the past, he knew something was problematic this time, as the sound was filled with distress.

"I heard a whining, and I knew something wasn't right. This time, it sounded in distress," Stevenson said.

Over 10 feet up in the nearby tree was the 7-year-old missing border collie, trapped in the branches above.

"He was kind of shielded by leaves on the tree," Stevenson added, who thinks that Laddy had been able to climb up the gently sliding tree but was then too afraid to make the climb back down.

"They got here pretty fast, but I was getting impatient … I didn't know if the dog would bite me, but I just sort of shimmied up the tree. I grabbed him by the collar and sort of pulled him. I said, 'It's time for you to get out of this tree.'"

Fortunately, a police officer passing by had noticed the missing dog flyers, and helped reunite Laddy with a very happy Cynthia Weeks later that day.

Exactly 222 golden retrievers are also making dog news this week, having come together for a Scottish festival that celebrated the conception of the breed over 150 years ago.
