ParkPlease Startup Aimed at San Francisco's Parking Mess

ParkPlease Startup Aimed at San Francisco's Parking Mess, From the land of startups, ParkPlease comes forward with a part-solution for San Francisco's parking nightmares, which grow increasingly worse amid strike threats, summer festivals, major construction projects, and restrictions on Sunday parking.

Park in My Space

ParkPlease co-founder Charlie Ansanelli said, "Since being introduced in the run-up to last year's Outside Lands, ParkPlease has connected 1,000 drivers needing parking spaces to owners of unused spaces able to rent them." Currently focusing on the Richmond and Sunset districts for their proximity to the August 9-11, 2013, event at Golden Gate Park, dozens of garages, driveways, and school and church parking lot spaces are being offered at prices from $18 to $90 per day. Prices are suggested by the owners and displayed via ParkPlease's interactive online map.

Putting Out the Welcome Mat

Injecting cash into the local economy but placing a strain on the infrastructure, visitors to San Francisco enjoy festivals and events. These attract tens of thousands of additional visitors in spurts. Our marathons, sports events, and food and music festivals are at the top of that list. For the Outside Lands lineup headed this year by Sir Paul McCartney, Nine Inch Nails, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, crowds of nearly 200,000 over the three days are expected to top last year's numbers.

Feeling the Pinch

The U.S. Census Bureau places San Francisco second on the list of most densely populated cities. Furthermore, San Francisco ranks as the costliest U.S. city for downtown parking fines, now set at $74, and January saw the discontinuation of free Sunday parking, ending a 65-year tradition.

San Francisco comes in as the third most congested U.S. city for traffic, with an unenviable showing at tenth worldwide, according to studies published by USA Today and Forbes.

BART Labor Talks

As a panel investigates BART labor discussions, Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to extend the strike ban from Sunday night to 60 more days. However, potential disruption looms, as does the influx of concert-goers converging for Outside Lands and likely relying on BART. ParkPlease is offering one remedy to maximize existing parking spaces for those who will resort to driving.
