Baby elephant cries for hours after mother violently rejects the newborn |
When the mother elephant first stomped on her baby, the handlers at a Chinese zoo first thought it was accidental, but they soon learned that wasn’t the case, according to The Inquisitr on Sept. 13.
The baby elephant was treated for injuries from being stomped on and returned to its mother in the pen when it happened again. The mother started to stomp on the baby elephant for the second time, revealing the obvious; this was done on purpose.
When the baby elephant was put back in the pen, the keepers had to jump in and drive the mother away from the baby. She was trying to trample the baby elephant to death.
This incident has stumped the keepers, as the mother and baby had bonded and all seemed fine. When the baby elephant was finally separated from its mother for good, it could not be consoled, as it cried for five hours. Pictures showed the newborn elephant lying underneath a blanket with tears streaming down its face.
While the baby elephant’s introduction to the world wasn’t very warm and loving, things have changed for the little guy. The elephant has adapted to its handlers and is thriving in its new surroundings, so this story does have a good ending.
The newborn elephant is now being raised by the zookeepers in the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Natural Reserve in Rongcheng, Shandong Province. There's no more tears today from the little fellow.
