There are plenty of people who were ready to attack the store for its choice of labeling, but many people were also coming out in support of what they had done. Either way, it caused executives to issue a response in order to try to quell the controversy before it got out of hand.
The store issued an apology and stated that the fiction tag would be removed from all Costco Bibles. They also stated that, "Our CEO, he's a devout Catholic. He obviously loves the Lord. This isn't something that he is purposely trying to do. It was a mistake."
At last report, there are no longer any versions of the book on store shelves with the old labels, potentially putting an end to this controversy.
