3 in Custody After Homicide at Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium Parking Lot, Updates from Monday, Dec. 2

Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today has more on the death of a man outside yesterday's game between the Chiefs and Broncos:

Kansas City police have released the identity of the man who collapsed outside Arrowhead Stadium Sunday and have turned to a residence in Independence, Mo., for clues about why and how he died.

Kyle A. Vanwinkle, a 30-year-old white male from Smithvillle, Mo., died after a struggle in the parking lot during the Chiefs' game against the Denver Broncos.

The cause of death is unknown and no obvious signs of trauma were found on Vanwinkle's body, Police spokesman Darin Snapp said.Three suspects have been taken into custody in connection to a death outside Arrowhead Stadium during Sunday's contest between the Broncos and Chiefs, reports Glenn E. Rice of The Kansas City Star.

According to Rice, police spokesman Darin Snapp said the fight involved a man in his 20s who got into a vehicle and was caught by the owner.

The victim, whose name has not been released, had been knocked unconscious and was declared dead upon his arrival at the hospital.

According to the report, fan rivalry did not play a part in the altercation.

While details are still coming in, the victim was neither shot nor stabbed, so it's unclear if he had a health condition of some sort. Police are still speaking to witnesses and gathering information to determine why the victim was inside the vehicle.

Rice added some chilling background information:

The incident occurred exactly a year after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed Kasandra Perkins, his live-in girlfriend and the mother of his infant daughter, at his home in east Kansas City. Belcher then drove to Arrowhead, where he fatally shot himself in front of coaches and the team’s general manager.

Of much lesser importance, Denver defeated Kansas City 35-28. The victory moves the Broncos to 10-2 on the season and puts them in the catbird seat for the AFC West championship.

Neither team has released an official statement on the incident at this time.
