65 car pileup, Black ice covering a highway in Worcester, Massachusetts caused a 65-vehicle pileup that sent about 35 people to the hospital and left at least two people seriously injured.
According to Boston.com, the accident began on Interstate 290 near exit 14 and spanned about 1,500 feet. Westbound traffic was closed for almost five hours in order to remove all the vehicles and passengers from the street.
“The road was a sheet of ice,” said Sergeant Stephen Marsh. “It was like if you went skating with your kids. It was that bad.”
Vehicles were transported to nearby parking lots while 60 people were bussed away from the scene of the accident.
The National Weather Service had issued a freezing rain advisory the morning of the pileup until 11 a.m. for several counties, including Worcester County, Northern Middlesex County, Southwest New Hampshire and the Connecticut River Valley, but Route 290 was not salted at the time of the accident, reports
