Simi valley shooting, Simi Valley police detectives are still at the scene of a bizarre incident Saturday evening that involved the fatal officer–involved shooting of a gunman who is suspected of killing his mother before going on a random shooting spree in his neighborhood, authorities said.
The incident began when police received a call about 4:45 p.m. from a man who said that his brother, Ryan Carnan, 29, had called him and told him he had shot and killed their mother in the 1100 block of Mellow Lane, according to a statement released by police.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the house on fire, police said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered a female adult inside who authorities believe is Carnan’s mother. Her identity has not been confirmed and an autopsy is pending to determine cause of death.
Officers were still at the scene when police began receiving reports of a man driving a tractor through the Bridle Path neighborhood and shooting a gun, police said. A SWAT team was dispatched, confronted the gunman and an officer-involved shooting occurred, police said. No officers were injured in the incident.
Were it not for the actions of the officers, more people could have been hurt or killed by the gunman, police said.
Based on information gathered from their investigation, police believed incendiary devices may have been inside the suspect’s residence and the Ventura County Bomb Squad was called to the scene, according to the police statement. Area residents were evacuated from the neighborhood while the residence was searched.
Police did not say what, if anything, was found inside. The investigation is continuing.
