Samantha Scheibe said it was a coincidence she was seeking a paid national interview and she claimed he pointed a gun at her Monday at her home in Apopka, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.
Zimmerman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence battery and criminal mischief, police said.
In its report Tuesday, Orlando television station WKMG shared text messages the TV station exchanged with Scheibe and her mother, Hope Mason, in the last three weeks about doing an interview.
In the story Scheibe said Zimmerman was depressed and fascinated by guns after he was acquitted of murder in the death of Martin, an unarmed black teen Zimmerman successfully argued he shot in self-defense last year.
In the WKMG story, Mason said Scheibe's daughter received a text message from George Zimmerman that was an image from an intimate home video of Scheibe and Zimmerman.
Scheibe and her mother both stressed Scheibe didn't seek out Zimmerman but Scheibe had known Zimmerman for years, grew close to him when his marriage weakened and stayed with him to help him.
WKMG's report the women wanted to be paid for interviews with national news organizations was confirmed to the Sentinel.
Scheibe and her mother said Zimmerman suffered from bouts of depression, which took a toll on their relationship, and caused Scheibe to fear her boyfriend, WKMG reported.
Mason said she hoped a national interview and the attention it would bring would force Zimmerman to get treatment and keep Scheibe safe, WKMG reported.
"Things have gotten hotter on her end. He has shown up two times already today to her house, so we need to make a move sooner than later so she stays safe," Mason wrote in a text message to the Orlando station.
Scheibe said Zimmerman began spiraling into depression soon after the trial ended. She said doctors prescribed medication to help him with the bouts of sadness and despair, but he eventually stopped taking it.
In her texts, Scheibe said Zimmerman had threatened to kill himself several times, WKMG said.
At his court appearance Tuesday in the alleged domestic violence incident with Scheibe, Zimmerman's lawyers said it was the first they heard allegations Zimmerman was possibly suicidal, WKMG said.
"I do not know if it's true or not," Jeff Dowdy of the Seminole County Public Defender's Office.
In his 911 call during Monday's incident with Scheibe, Zimmerman said Scheibe had "gone crazy on me."
Zimmerman told the dispatcher he thought Scheibe was pregnant with their child. Seminole County Sheriff's officials said Scheibe isn't pregnant.
