Audi Confirms Q1 Subcompact SUV for Manufacture in 2016, Release in 2016-17

Audi Confirms Q1 Subcompact SUV for Manufacture in 2016, Release in 2016-17, It will be quite a while before this vehicle arrives in showrooms, but German carmaker Audi announced that it will be diversifying its offerings further by developing a subcompact crossover SUV to be known as the Q1.  The Q1, which is pictured here in a graphical render, will be manufactured in 2016, which pegs it for a release sometime that year, or possibly in 2017.

While Audi is best known as a manufacturer of premium, often high-performance cars, the Q5 crossover is actually the best-selling Audi in the United States; so far, 31,979 units have been sold year-to-date as of the end of October 2013.

That puts the Q5 slightly ahead of the outgoing A4 sedan in terms of domestic car sales.  With that in mind, the Q1 could join the Q3 and Q5 among Audi’s crossover offerings for the American market, and while that’s not yet confirmed, the trend towards smaller, more economical vehicles make that a solid, if not strong possibility.

Details on the expected entry-level Audi Q1 are quite scant, but according to reports, the only thing known are the obvious – the vehicle should have five doors, while the grille’s overall design may be, according to Audi head designer Wolfgang Egger, “wider and bolder.”  The automaker also has yet to confirm which platform the Q1 will be based on, or what type of engine could power it.
