Bodies dehydrated and sometimes washed in vinegar in Capuchin Catacombs

Bodies dehydrated and sometimes washed in vinegar in Capuchin Catacombs, Have you heard of the Capuchin Catacombs? The place where bodies have been dehydrated and in many cases washed in vinegar and then put on display for all to see! Although a monument, it’s kind of morbid!

Bodies dehydrated and sometimes washed in vinegar in Capuchin Catacombs

In 1599 brother Silvestro of Gubbio was mummified and put into the newly dug catacombs of Capuchin monastery in Palermo, Sicily.

Gradually more deceased monks were added until local nobles and well to do people started asking to be put on display there, in certain clothing, some with clothing regularly changed. Through the families donations bodies were kept in prominent places and if donations stopped they were put on a shelf down the back corridors.

Over time this place has become a huge historical record and a kind of odd morbid macabre art exhibit!

The bodies are lined up and have been stripped back to their skeletons, it looks like an odd sight! I have not been there but would love to one day.
